About
About Vienna Gaels GAA
Vienna Gaels GAA is the home of Gaelic games in Vienna, Austria. Since 2004, the club has brought together players from Ireland, Austria, and around the world to play traditional Irish sports, compete across Europe, and build a welcoming sporting community in the heart of Vienna.
What began as a small group of enthusiasts has grown into a vibrant international club representing Vienna in European Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) & Gaelic Games Europe (GGE) competitions.
Today, Vienna Gaels continues to introduce new players to Gaelic games while providing a home for experienced players living abroad.
What We Play
At Vienna Gaels we play some of Ireland’s most exciting traditional sports:
- Gaelic Football – a fast, dynamic field sport combining skill, athleticism, and teamwork
- Hurling – one of the fastest field sports in the world
- Camogie – the women’s counterpart of hurling
- Handball – One wall and four wall (a.k.a wallball)
Our teams compete regularly in European GAA tournaments, travelling to cities across the continent and hosting visiting clubs in Vienna.
Whether you’re a seasoned player or trying the sport for the first time, our training sessions are open and welcoming.
An International Club
Vienna Gaels reflects the international character of Vienna itself.
Our players come from many countries and backgrounds, united by a shared love of sport, community, and competition. While many members have Irish roots, a large part of the club is made up of players who discovered Gaelic games for the first time after moving to Vienna.
For many people new to the city, the club provides:
- A way to stay active
- A social network and community
- A chance to experience Irish sporting culture
- Opportunities to travel and compete across Europe
No previous experience is required. We are always happy to teach new players the game.
More Than Just Sport
While competition is an important part of the club, Vienna Gaels is also about building friendships and community.
Throughout the year we organise:
- Club social events
- Trips to European tournaments
- Celebrations and gatherings with other clubs
- Activities that bring together players, supporters, and families
For many members, Vienna Gaels becomes a home away from home in Vienna.
